Replacing a Rear Wheel Bearing on a B5 Audi: Step-by-Step Guide
If you need to replace a rear wheel bearing on your B5 Audi, this step-by-step guide will help you do it yourself. Here's what you'll need:
- A wheel bearing service kit
- Breaker bar
- Pry bar
- Socket set
- Torque wrench
Step 1: Remove the Rear Caliper and Rotor
Start by removing the rear caliper and brake pads. Then remove the bracket and rotor to access the dust shield and hub assembly.
Step 2: Remove the Axle Bolt
Use a breaker bar to loosen the axle bolt. If it's too tight, use a pry bar to hold the hub assembly in place while you loosen the bolt. Once the bolt is out, pull the axle out from the back of the upright.
Step 3: Disconnect the Sway Bar End Link Bolt
To gain more access to the axle assembly, disconnect the sway bar end link bolt and the bolt at the upper A-arm. Loosen the lower bolt and mark it to ensure you can put it back in the same spot and maintain your alignment. Once you've loosened the bolt, remove it and the upper A-arm bolt to swing the upright away from the car.
Step 4: Check the Wheel Bearing
Now that you have the axle disengaged from your hub, you can check the wheel bearing. If it's bad, you can proceed to the next step.
Step 5: Use the U-Shaped Tool to Remove the Spindle
To remove the spindle from the wheel bearing, use the U-shaped tool and a couple of machine screws that come with the kit. Slide the tool over the outside of the hub and tighten the screws down until the plate is tight against the hub. Then, use the three long bolts to drive the spindle off.
Step 6: Remove the Wheel Bearing
Use the wheel bearing service kit to remove the old wheel bearing. Use the collar and plates and little disks to pull the bearing out and press the new one back in.
Step 7: Reinstall the Spindle
Once the new wheel bearing is in place, reinstall the spindle by reversing the steps you used to remove it. Make sure to use a torque wrench to tighten the axle bolt to the manufacturer's recommended torque.
By following these steps, you can replace a rear wheel bearing on a B5 Audi on your own. This will save you time and money compared to taking your car to a mechanic.
